Jere’s story is so well aligned with these values of persistence that we just had to sit down with Jere and learn about the path he has traveled. His journey often felt like it was right on the edge of failure, but instead led to success and growth.
Investing in His Future
A self-starter even in his youth, Jere diligently worked to save up enough money to put himself through college—but only one year. Deciding that he didn’t trust himself with the cash, he gave it to the school straightaway in one lump sum. “It wasn’t safe in my hands,” he explains of this decision. But he soon decided he’d made a mistake; in his eyes, a big one.
Jere realized the entire venture seemed fruitless if he couldn’t afford all four years: “What was the point of doing any of this if I wasn’t going to be able to complete it?” So, Jere decided before ever setting foot in a classroom to write off the sunk costs and use his year at college as an incubator. He would launch his own competitive business.
“My goal in starting the business wasn’t really financial success. It was to have portfolio material to get a job. I was thinking, ‘I won’t have any experience or education, so I need to build a company that speaks louder than that. I need to demonstrate all the skills that a high-paid webmaster would have.’”
Not Your Everyday College Experience
Jere began to build. He built MouseMalls.com, a small e-commerce business, in 1998. His intense focus on work was made possible through a mutually beneficial arrangement with his dorm’s Resident Advisor. His RA kept his dorm room clear of roommates so that Jere could work, and Jere helped the RA make social connections.
As it turns out, Jere says simply living at the college “was actually the most cash-efficient way to start a dot-com.” At the time, an Internet commerce company required access to a T1 line. While business access required Fortune 500-levels of money and power, many universities had installed them—Jere’s included. He was able to access the T1 line without having to pay the prerequisite premium.
Jere further utilized university resources by consulting the school’s staff, seeking out legal advice and marketing help whenever possible. “I’d run around to the legal department, where I’d lay out my business problems and they’d help me solve them. Or the marketing department, where I’d say, ‘listen, I’m growing this dot-com. I can give you a real use case for your students to work on instead of the fictitious one you’re working with.’ It was a great way to get cost-effective consulting.”
In describing his university experience, Simpson laughs good-naturedly and admits that his approach to college was an unorthodox one. He failed out after a year but didn’t leave empty-handed. He had a year of entrepreneurial experience, a small but profitable business, and the fierce motivation to prove himself.
Building on Early Success
Building MouseMalls.com and selling it to Amazon was only the beginning for Jere Simpson. He went on to create and sell more companies to other big names like Comcast. He spent years as a consultant, utilizing his positions within established companies to learn and grow professionally. He founded KITEWIRE Mobility and grew it into a flourishing endeavor.
